Ultrasound

Was your pregnancy test positive at PRA? It’s time for an ultrasound!

In addition to confirming the positive pregnancy test result, ultrasound scans answer three very important questions. This information is crucial before you make decisions about your next steps, whether you’re considering abortion, adoption, or parenting. After a positive pregnancy test, and meeting certain qualifications, we can offer an ultrasound so you can learn more about the pregnancy.

IS THE PREGNANCY VIABLE (the pregnancy has not miscarried and is not ectopic)?

This is the first question you need to have answered. Approximately 10-20% of known pregnancies end in natural miscarriage, and it’s possible to have a positive pregnancy test but also miscarry.

If you’re considering an abortion for your unplanned pregnancy, it’s important to know if the pregnancy is viable (that the pregnancy has not miscarried and is not ectopic). If it has naturally ended, without a heartbeat, an abortion will not be necessary but a medical procedure may be needed. Always follow-up with your Dr.

FAQ

Where Is The Pregnancy Located?

The second question an ultrasound answers is, “Where is the pregnancy located?” Did you know sometimes the embryo implants somewhere other than in the uterus? This is called an ectopic or tubal pregnancy since the most common place outside the uterus is in the fallopian tubes.

An ectopic pregnancy can pose serious health threats. If your pregnancy is ectopic, you’ll need to seek emergency medical care to ensure your health is not at risk

How Far Along Is The Pregnancy?

Finally, an ultrasound can estimate how far along you are. This will be helpful no matter which pregnancy outcome you’re considering.
